Your Bowen Treatment

What can you expect in a session?

In a Bowen Therapy session you can expect a series of gentle rolling movements performed directly on the skin
or through light clothing.  These moves are made over key points on muscles, nerves and ligaments.  This is followed by regular short breaks.

These breaks are essential and unique to Bowen.  During the breaks your therapist will leave the room.  Your body has time to gently respond to
the treatment in your own pace.  Your brain can register the disturbance created by the moves, and check which adjustments and re-balancing are needed.

How long will it last?

A Bowen Therapy session usually lasts round about an hour.  As a rule it results in a deep sense of overall relaxation.

How many treatments will you need?

Bowen Therapy is not a long treatment program.  Many people feel significantly better after the first or second session - depending on the type and seriousness of the injury.  Most clients find that 3 or 4 sessions are adequate to bring effective change and relieve even long standing chronic pain.

For long-standing complaints some more  and more regular treatments may be needed, with shorter or longer intervals as judged appropriate.
You may come for 6-weekly, quartely or half-yearly top-ups for ongoing support and to maintain optimum health.

People have told me afterwards how amazed they were with the results of their treatment. They wonder how such a gentle therapy can bring about such great results.

After the treatment

You could have a reaction to treatment.  This is not uncommon.  It includes tiredness, increase in original symptoms, stiffness, headaches, flu like symptoms, increased dream activity.  Movement, the drinking of water and the return for further treatments is important.  It is vital that you do not cease the treatment in response to a strong reaction.  The moves are so subtle that if a strong reaction is experienced it demonstrates how profound the work can be and further treatments are essential if the full effect is going to be felt.

Bowen and other therapies

For maximum benefit it is strongly advised that you do not mix it with other therapies like reflexology, massage and physiotherapy for one week either side of treatment.  This also applies to chiropractic or osteopathic treatments.  However you can continue with your prescribed medication and your usual exercise routine and diet.

The Bowen Technique is not intended as a substitute for medical advice or treatment.  Your practitioner may advise you to consult your GP if there are any queries c
oncerning your health.
