Thomas Ambrose Bowen

It all started with Thomas Bowen.
He lived in Geelong, Victoria, Australia
from 1916 -1982.

He was a quiet unassuming man on the outside, but inside a noble man of great sensitivity, insight and  generosity.

After serving in World War 2, Tom
became interested in ways to alleviate
human suffering and began to study
different healing practises.

At work people spoke about their aches and pains and Tom began to treat them.  He noticed that certain moves on the body had particular effects on peoples' health, posture and pain levels.  People responded very well to his treatment.

Soon he was seeing people in the evenings after his days work at the Geelong Cement Works and on Saturdays too.

Eventually he started his own full-time and very busy practice.  Tom was profoundly deaf and had lost a leg to diabetes.  But he treated 13.000 people a year by the end of his life with a healing rate of 88%.

There were a number of people who at times worked alongside Tom to learn from him.  One of them an Osteopath and Natural Therapist, Oswald Rentsch documented Tom’s work after his death in 1982 and began to teach the technique in several continents.

Now the Bowen Technique is organised in a few different bodies worldwide and gaining publicity and popularity.  The technique is being taught all over the world.

Registered therapists can be found in different registers around the world.  In the Europe that is the Bowen Therapist European Register or BTER.
